JOHN 19: 28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.”
IT’S A PARADOX.
JESUS HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF INNOCENCE.
THE HEALER IS EXPERIENCING HARM.
THE LIVING WORD IS DYING.
THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD IS CLOAKED IN DARKNESS…IT’S A PARADOX.
EXPERIENCING THE PAIN OF BEING SPIRITUALLY SEPARATED FROM THE FATHER, SO THAT WE COULD BE RECONCILED TO THE FATHER…HE WHO WAS SINLESS BECAME SIN…IT’S A PARADOX.
THE ONE WHO IS THE SELF-DECLARED “LIVING WATER,” IS CRYING OUT “I THIRST.”
JESUS CRIES OUT (FIRST), BECAUSE OF A PHYSICAL NEED - HE’S LOSING BLOOD AND FLUIDS. THE ROMAN CRUCIFIXION WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT…JESUS IS DYING! REMEMBER, HE IS FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN. HE IS LOSING HIS LIFE SO THAT WE COULD FIND OURS… I THIRST.
HE’S DEHYDRATED - HIS ORGANS ARE SHUTTING DOWN - THE WEIGHT OF HIS BODY UPON THE NAILS AND THE CROSS MAKE IT EXCRUCIATING FOR HIM TO SPEAK - YET HE SPOKE A RECORDED SEVEN TIMES. THIS TIME, HE LIFTS HIMSELF UP TO GASP AIR AND TO COMMUNICATE A PHYSICAL NEED. I THIRST.
HE CRIES “I THIRST” OUT OF PHYSICAL NEED, AND FINALLY HE CRIES “I THIRST” TO FULFILL A PROPHETICAL NEED
JESUS IS COMMITTED TO THE FULFILLMENT OF THE FATHER’S WILL, AND TO THE FULFILLMENT OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY…HE HAD TO GO TO JERUSALEM. HE HAD TO SUFFER. HE HAD TO DIE…
AND WITH HIS ACTIONS OF GIVING HIMSELF TO BE CRUCIFIED, JESUS’ WORDS ALSO SUBMIT TO THE PROPHETICAL NEED…
YOU SEE, IN Psalm 69:21 (CSB): 21 Instead, they gave me gall for my food,
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
THIS MESSIANIC PSALM GIVES US A GLIMPSE INTO THIS CRUCIFIXION SCENE. FOR VS. John 19:29 (CSB): 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth.
TO WHICH SCRIPTURE RECORDS HE DOES NOT DRINK…
JESUS ISN’T DECLARING I THIRST TO GET SOMETHING TO DRINK. HE’S DECLARING I THIRST FOR PROPHETIC FULFILLMENT…
JESUS DIDN’T DRINK FROM THE SPONGE, HE DRANK FROM THE CUP - Matthew 26:39 (CSB): My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
